AI is the microwave of human centred design. Wait, hear me out...
I've been trying to think of a a good analogy for how I see AI's role in HCD
We all get excited about those shiny new tools, and AI is the biggest, shiniest one in our "kitchen" right now. But here's the thing: when it comes to crafting truly delicious user experiences, AI isn't a gourmet chef...it's a microwave.
Need a quick meal? Frozen leftovers? Boom, they've got you covered. But would you try to create a Michelin-starred dish with one? No.
Here's why I think this analogy works for AI and design:
Speed vs. Finesse: AI is amazing for quick iterations, generating content on the fly, anything where efficiency is king. But the nuances of human emotion, the elegance of a perfectly crafted interaction – that takes time and a different type of skill.
The Recipe Matters: Just like you wouldn't nuke a raw steak and expect magic, AI needs input. Data, user insights, clear goals... that's the recipe it uses. rubbish in, rubbish out, even with the fanciest tech.
Sometimes, Slow-Cooking IS Better: AI can't replace the deep dives into user research, the collaborative brainstorms, or those moments of strategic brilliance that happen away from the screen. Those are the slow-cooked elements of great design.
Okay, so where does the microwave (aka AI) shine as a productivity tool?
Reheating those boring tasks: Need placeholder copy, basic wireframes, a mood board to kick things off? AI can serve those up faster than you can say "popty ping."
Defrosting creative block: Sometimes a wacky AI-generated idea is exactly what you need to get unstuck. It might be terrible, but it gets the juices flowing.
Batch-cooking the basics: Need 50 variations on an icon? AI will do that for you. That frees up brainpower for the most challenging problems.
AI is a tool, and a powerful one. But real human centred design is about the long game. Understanding your ingredients (users), crafting the perfect recipe (strategy), and knowing when to put in the time for a slow-cooked masterpiece.
